Poodle History
The poodle is believed to have originated in Germany near the 16th century, desending from the water retriever (called Pudel). The poodle was eventually cultivated into smaller breeds in France (called Caniche). It is in France where the poodle became a favored companion to the elite/royalty. It is also theorized that further miniaturizing of the poodle occurred to produce a toy version from possibly using a breed now known as a Maltese. The poodle's characteristics, i.e. intellect, affection, etc. was very popular, thus eventually making the poodle the national dog of France. The poodle is documented in traveling carnivals throughout Europe, showcasing the performing abilities of this breed. It is also belived that the popularity of the traveling carnivals may have contributed to the population in European countries in the 19th century. The first poodle was registered in the Kennel Club (KC) in 1874. Although it is unkown when the first poodle arrived in the US, the first known poodle was registered with the American Kennel Club (AKC) in 1887. The poodle population nearly died out in the US around the turn of the 20th century and did not resurge until the 1930's. The population surged once again in the 1950's in the US and again in the 1960's contuing a steady increase for over 20 yrs into the "80's". This increase is believed to have resulted in health issues/faults from indiscriminate breeding. Some of the issues include unstable patellas, ingrown eyelashes and nervous dispositions. Presently, the poodle population has abated and the associated health issues/faults have also abated.
